Weapons and Items
Standard Weapons and Items
Standard weapons and items can be obtained (bought) at various locations (shops) throughout the game using gold coins. These shops will appear at home bases as well as possibly other locations on the map.
Because of the large numbers of weapons and items respawning weapons and items will not work well, and respawning weapons and items in general are somewhat silly.
Map-Permanent Weapons and Items
A "map-permanenet" weapon or item is a weapon or item that always exists on a given map. It begins is a specified location (or one of a set of locations) When the player using the item is killed it is always dropped, and if the item is not picked up for some amount of time it returns to a respawn location. (To ensure it doesn't get stuck somewhere really out of the way where nobody can find it or reach it) There may be more than one of the same type of map-permanent items or weapons on a level, but we would expect that to be rare. Examples of map-permanent weapons would be an axe that gives back health when it does damage, or a necklace that halves all damage. Things that would be too powerful if they existed in large numbers.
Economics
There are a number of questions about the economics involved in buying weapons.
How do you earn gold? Gold can be gained at a fixed rate, with adjustments made for negative or positive actions. For example dying might cost 200 gold, killing an opponent might be worth 50.
How often do you have to buy weapons? This is determined by two factors: what happens when you die, and can weapons wear down and break? Armor and shields should be able to wear down, as well as weapons that can be used for blocking and absorbing damage. (Certainly makes things more interesting, and puts a natural limit on blocking ability) What happens when you die will have to be tweaked, but one likely scenario is that you drop some number range of items when you die.
The system should be balanced so that the average player can, in general, make small forward progress during the game and as the game goes by equip somewhat better weapons and items.
