Game Types
Game types come in two flavors, symmetrical and asymentrical. A symmetrical game is a game where each team or player has the same starting conditions or goal. (Like CTF) An asymmetrical game is a game where each team has different objectives. (Like capture/free hostages)
Symmetrical Games:
Deathmatch
Capture the Flag
Pigskin Pummel
Capture Territory
Asymmetrical Games:
Seige
Protect the VIP
Deathmatch
Deathmatch is standard kill or be killed, as either teams or individuals.
Rules:Kill stuff!
Finish Criteria:First to N kills
Finish Criteria:Time Limit
Optional Rules/Variants: None.
Capture the Flag
Capture the Flag is your fairly standard Capture the Flag game, with a few optional rules for reducing some of the problems in Tribes 2, notably getting ahead then hiding a flag forever. In Tribes 2 once a team is sufficiently ahead they can capture the enemy flag and then run and hide with it, winning when time is out. The game is called Capture the Flag, not Hide the Flag, and that style of play abuses the intended spirit of the game.
Rules:Capture the enemy flag and return it to your base while your own flag resides there.
Finish Criteria:First to N captures.
Finish Criteria:Time Limit w/optional sudden death.
Optional Rules/Variants: Allow captures to count even if your own flag is not at base.
Optional Rules/Variants: Flags return to owner's base after certain (long) time has passed, regardless of current location.
Pigskin Pummel
Somewhat similar to Bombing Run(?) in UT2K3 or some single-flag CTF mods. Think rugby. (Exact rules TBD) It would be neat if it was structured more like a sport - with some simple rules, maybe periods or downs or something of the sort. (UT2003 Bombing Run is pretty similar to CTF for the most part)
Capture Territory
The goal of this is to capture and hold N places at the same time. To capture a location your team must have some member standing near that location for a certain length of time. If all the team members in the capture radius are killed or move out of the radius the timer resets. First team to capture all N locations at the same time scores a point.
Rules:Capture N locations.
Rules:To capture a location the location must be occupied by members of a given team for X time. When the first teammate moves within distance of the location the timer begins. The time can only be stopped when all members of that team are cleared of that location. If the location is captured it becomes property of that team, and can be captured by the other team.
Rules:At the start of rounds all locations are neutral and can be captured by either team.
Finish Criteria:First to N captures.
Finish Criteria:Time Limit w/optional sudden death.
Seige (Asymmetrical)
Similar to Capture Territory, but the defending team starts with all N territories under their control, and the goal is to hold on to those for as long as possible. As the match proceeds capturing on attack becomes faster and recapturing on defense becomes slower. When all the territories are captured the sides switch, and the new attackers must beat the old time.
Rules:Defend N Locations/Capture N Locations.
Rules:Attacking team captures locations similarly to in Capture Territory. Defending team can recapture locations. As game progresses the time it takes to capture a location for the attacking team decreases, while the time to recapture increases.
Rules:At a configurable time-limit if attackers have not won yet they are automatically losers. (At that time the time to capture a location should be near zero, if they can't win then they are never going to. This condition will rarely be reached)
Finish Criteria:Each team plays as attacker once, team with lowest time to capture wins.
Protect the Hostage/VIP/Crytal Orb/Whatever
One team tries to protect something, other team tries to kill it.
Finish Criteria:Attacking team kills thing, they win.
Finish Criteria:Defending team sneaks thing to safety or time expires, they win.
